2nd Jyothirlinga Rameshwaram๐๏ธ

Rameshwaram! If Kashi is where Lord Shiva calls you from the north, Rameshwaram is where He calls you from the south โ surrounded by the roaring sea ๐ . After Kashi, this was the stop I was most excited about in our 12 Jyotirlinga journey, and it did NOT disappoint!
The Divine Darshan โ Morning, Evening & Everything In Between ๐โจ
We did darshan twice โ once in the evening and once the next morning with Theertha Abhishekam, and honestly both were completely different experiences and both were beautiful in their own way! ๐
The evening darshan had a calm, golden-hour energy to it โ the temple lit up, and the corridors of Ramanathaswamy Temple… oh my goodness, those corridors! I had read about them being the longest temple corridors in the world but seeing them in person is something else entirely. You walk and walk and walk and the pillars just keep going! ๐๏ธโจ It feels like walking through time itself.
The morning darshan with Theertha Abhishekam was pure magic. ๐ช There was something incredibly peaceful about it โ the chants, the sacred water, the priests, the whole atmosphere just pulls you in. But there were crazy long queues! We hadn’t booked any special darshan and still had a beautiful darshan experience.
The 22 Theerthams โ A Bath Like No Other ๐
When I first heard about bathing in 22 different theerthams (sacred wells), I was like… 22?! Really?! ๐ But we did it, and it was one of the most unique and memorable experiences of the entire pilgrimage!
Each theertham has its own significance, its own story, its own energy. The temple priests guide you through and pour water over you from each sacred well โ some warm, some cool, some with a distinct smell, all incredibly holy. By the end, you feel cleansed in a way that’s hard to describe. ๐งโโ๏ธ๐ซ Not just physically โ there’s something deeply spiritual that happens when you surrender to the process.
Wear clothes you don’t mind getting soaked! ๐ Carry a change of clothes and a small bag for your belongings. There is a separate changing place for ladies (for which you need to walk little far). The whole experience takes a couple of hours but it is absolutely worth every minute!
Completing the Sacred Kashi-Rameshwaram Ritual ๐๐ง
If you’ve been following my Kashi post, you’ll know about this beautiful ritual โ carrying Ganga water from Kashi to offer at Rameshwaram, and then bringing back ocean water and sand to make a Shivalinga back in Kashi. We completed this full sacred cycle here and the feeling was just… indescribable. ๐ฅน
Standing at the edge of the ocean with Ganga jal in hand, offering it to Lord Rameshwaram โ that moment made the entire year-long pilgrimage feel worth it. This is what they mean when they say the north and south of India are spiritually connected. ๐๐๏ธ
Day Trip via Auto โ Dhanushkodi & More ๐๐
We hired an auto for the day and covered all the major spots around Rameshwaram โ highly recommend this! It’s the most convenient and affordable way to see everything.
Dhanushkodi ๐๏ธ This ghost town at the tip of India is hauntingly beautiful. The ruins of the old town, the meeting point of the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, the vast stretch of white sand โ it has a very different, almost surreal energy. The drive there itself through the narrow strip of land with sea on both sides is breathtaking! ๐
Pro Tip: Go in the morning or late afternoon โ the midday sun at Dhanushkodi is brutal! ๐ฅต Carry water and sunscreen. The road is bumpy so be prepared for a bit of a bumpy auto ride ๐
Gandamadanam Hill ๐๏ธ The small hill temple where Lord Hanuman’s footprints are believed to be enshrined โ and from the top, you get a sweeping panoramic view of Rameshwaram island. So worth the climb! ๐
APJ Abdul Kalam House ๐ This one surprised me with how moving it was. The humble home of one of India’s greatest minds, right here in Rameshwaram. Seeing where he grew up, the photographs, the memorabilia โ it’s a beautiful reminder that greatness comes from the simplest of places. ๐ฎ๐ณโค๏ธ

Final Thoughts ๐ซ
Rameshwaram is one of those places that stays with you long after you’ve left. The ancient temple, the sacred ocean, the mythological history woven into every corner of the island โ it’s spiritual, it’s beautiful, it’s unlike anywhere else in India. ๐
If Kashi is where you find Shiva in fire and ghats and chaos, Rameshwaram is where you find Him in the stillness of the ocean and the echo of ancient chants in long stone corridors. Both are divine, both are unforgettable, and together they form the most sacred spiritual loop in Sanatana Dharma. ๐๏ธ๐
Travel Tips โ๏ธ๐
Travel Mode ๐งณ
Flight ๐ซ
The nearest airport is Madurai Airport (IXM) โ well-connected, convenient, and the go-to choice for most travellers. There’s also Tuticorin Airport (TCR) if you enjoy taking the scenic route to your scenic destination! ๐ From Madurai, regular taxis and buses head straight to Rameshwaram and take around 3 to 3.5 hours โ a comfortable ride with the anticipation building beautifully with every kilometre. ๐
Train ๐
Rameshwaram is well-connected by train from Chennai and Bangalore, and honestly, the train journey here deserves its own travel post! ๐ The railway line runs parallel to the sea alongside the iconic Pamban Bridge โ you’re literally riding on water with waves crashing below you. It’s dramatic, it’s scenic, it’s slightly terrifying in the best way possible. ๐ If you have the option of taking the train, TAKE THE TRAIN. You can thank me later.
Bus ๐
Well-connected from Madurai and most major South Indian cities, the bus is your budget-friendly best friend here! ๐ The route is scenic and lovely โ just pack some snacks, queue up your playlist, and enjoy the ride. ๐ถ๐ช
Accomodation ๐จ
Stay near temple (Recommended! ๐)
Listen, I’ll say what I said about Kashi and I’ll say it again โ stay near the temple, period. ๐ In Rameshwaram, the auto-rickshaws have a minimum charge of โน100 even for distances that feel like you could sneeze and reach there. And forget about Ola or Uber โ they simply don’t exist here! ๐ So unless you enjoy burning money on autos for every tiny errand, do yourself a favour and book something walking distance from the temple. There are plenty of options available nearby โ just check the ratings carefully before booking and you’ll be sorted! ๐
Food stops ๐ฝ๏ธ
Rameshwaram doesn’t have a flashy food scene, but what it DOES have is something that hits differently after all that temple-hopping โ Brahmin hotels near the temple! ๐โจ These humble, no-frills eateries serve the most comforting Idli Sambar you’ll ever have, and the filter kaapi… oh, the filter kaapi. Thick, frothy, perfectly sweet โ if you skip it, I will personally be very disappointed in you. ๐โ Seriously, do NOT leave Rameshwaram without having a proper South Indian breakfast at one of these Brahmin hotels. Simple food, pure soul. โค๏ธ
Getting Around ๐บ
For the full-day sightseeing circuit โ Dhanushkodi, Gandamadanam, and Abdul Kalam House โ hire an auto and negotiate a package deal upfront! The autos have their own set packages for this route, so ask around, compare prices, and then bargain with confidence ๐ Fix the price before you get in โ a lesson every seasoned pilgrim learns, usually the hard way! ๐ธ
Shopping zone ๐๏ธ๐ณ
Rameshwaram has market lanes but it is limited near temple and you get variety of pooja items here, But Dhanushkodi is where things get interesting. The local vendors there sell the most beautiful sea shell crafts, pearl jewellery, and fancy home dรฉcor items made from what the ocean so generously offers. ๐โจ Think wind chimes, shell photo frames, pearl earrings โ perfect souvenirs that literally carry the energy of the sea back home with you! Just remember: bargaining is absolutely the key here. Go in with your best poker face and your most determined smile. ๐ช๐
Next stop on the 12 Jyotirlinga journey coming soon โ stay tuned! ๐ฉโจ
