5th Jyothirlinga Omkareshwar / MamaleshwarποΈ

Omkareshwar is where He humbles you β sitting serenely on a sacred island in the middle of the holy Narmada, shaped by nature itself into the form of Om ποΈπ. Another incredible stop on our 12 Jyotirlinga journey and one that carries a very distinct, quiet energy of its own!
The Divine Darshan β Long Queues & Every Minute Worth It πβ¨
Let me be honest with you β the queues at Omkareshwar are no joke! π We waited, and we waited, and then we waited some more. But the moment you finally step into the sanctum and stand before the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga β every single minute of that wait just melts away. There is a rawness to this darshan, an intimacy, that hits you right in the chest. No amount of queue prepares you for that moment. Go with patience, go with an open heart, and Baba will take care of the rest. π
Pro Tip: Arrive as early as possible β the queues only grow as the day progresses! β° Mornings are your best bet for a slightly more manageable wait.
Mamleshwar Temple ποΈπ
Just across the river on the mainland sits Mamleshwar β the second Jyotirlinga of Omkareshwar, and together they make this the only place in the world where TWO Jyotirlingas are counted as one. π²β¨ Many visitors get so caught up in the main temple that they miss Mamleshwar entirely β please don’t make that mistake! The temple was more crowded as there is no such crowd management here but the darshan here feels deeply personal. A beautiful, very near to the shivling than the counterpart . ποΈ
The Narmada β A River That Stops You In Your Tracks π
I was not fully prepared for how beautiful the Narmada views here would be. π The sacred river wrapping around the island, the ghats, the soft sounds of flowing water against temple bells in the background β it’s the kind of scene that makes you just stop and stand still for a moment. π The Narmada is considered even more sacred than the Ganga in certain traditions, and standing at her banks here at Omkareshwar, you completely understand why. Take a moment at the ghats β just sit, breathe, and take it all in. You won’t regret it. ππ§

Getting There & How We Did It πβ¨
We didn’t stay in Omkareshwar overnight β instead we made it a smooth one-way journey! We hired a cab from Indore, drove to Omkareshwar for darshan, and then headed straight to Ujjain afterwards. π This worked out beautifully β no rushing back, no retracing routes, and we got to tick off two sacred cities in one day! If you’re doing the Jyotirlinga circuit like us, this Indore β Omkareshwar β Ujjain route is absolutely the way to go. πΊοΈβ¨
Indore is the most convenient base β well connected by train and flight β and cabs are easily available for this entire stretch. Highly recommend planning it as a one-way drop rather than a round trip. Saves time, saves money, and just makes sense! ππ
Final Thoughts π
Omkareshwar is one of those places that doesn’t announce itself loudly. It doesn’t need to. The island, the river, the lingam, the legend β it all just quietly wraps around you. You come for the Jyotirlinga and you leave carrying something you can’t quite name. ποΈ That, perhaps, is exactly what Omkareshwar is meant to give you. πβ¨
Travel Tips βοΈπ
Travel Mode π§³
Flight π«
The nearest airport is Indore Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport (IDR) β well connected and the go-to choice for most travellers flying in. βοΈ Taxis are readily available from the airport to both Omkareshwar and Ujjain, so getting around is completely hassle-free! π
Train π
For trains, Barwaha Station is the closest option, while Indore Junction is the major well-connected hub for those coming from farther cities. π
Bus π
MPRTC operates regular services from Indore, Ujjain, and Mhow β affordable and fairly convenient! ππ
Accomodation π¨
Stay near temple (Recommended! π)
We didn’t stay overnight in Omkareshwar since we travelled straight to Ujjain the same day β but there are plenty of budget friendly options if you plan to spend a night! The MP Tourism Temple View Hotel is a great pick for that gorgeous river and temple view waking up to ππ
Food stops π½οΈ
Don’t leave without eating at Omkar Prasadalay β run by the temple trust, it serves the most simple, soulful Bhojan Thali and Khichdi at an incredibly low cost. π₯£π Clean, humble, and made with so much intention β exactly the kind of food a pilgrimage day calls for! And of course the streets around the temple are lined with the usual beloved suspects β poha, jalebi, kachori, peda π¬ β all fresh, all delicious, all available almost everywhere you turn! π
Shopping zone ποΈπ³
The shops here have your usual pooja essentials, prasad and toys β but the real gem? The Narmadeshwar Shivlingas ποΈ β naturally shaped stones from the sacred Narmada river that resemble a Shivalinga. They come in different classifications and the shopkeepers will happily walk you through each one with so much knowledge and enthusiasm! We could have listened for hours π. A truly unique and sacred thing to carry home from Omkareshwar. π
Next stop on the 12 Jyotirlinga journey coming soon β stay tuned! π©β¨
