Montreux β A Lakeside Dream π»π

Some places you plan for months, and some places just happen to you β Montreux was very much the latter. π₯Ήβ¨ We’d originally hoped to grab GoldenPass tickets to Interlaken, the famous Bollywood movie-spot city that half of Indian cinema seems to have been shot in at some point. But the tickets just didn’t work out, and rather than let that derail the day, we decided to stay back and explore Montreux instead. Honestly? One of the best last-minute pivots of the trip. ππ
I still can’t quite believe it β Montreux was a name I’d only ever come across tucked into the pages of books, never once imagining I’d actually stand on its shores one day. Turns out, sometimes the places you didn’t plan for end up meaning the most. ππ
Montreux Lakeside Promenade β Postcard Perfect, Every Step ππΈ
The Montreux Lakeside Promenade is easily one of the prettiest waterfront walks we came across on this entire trip. π· Palm trees (yes, palm trees, in Switzerland!) line the path alongside Lake Geneva, with the Alps rising dramatically on the opposite shore. We spent a long, unhurried stretch of the day just walking along it β stopping for photos, watching swans glide by, and soaking in a view that genuinely looked unreal in person. β¨π¦’
Freddie Mercury Statue β A Rockstar by the Lake π€ποΈ
No visit to Montreux is complete without stopping by the Freddie Mercury Statue, standing proudly right in front of the market square (Place du MarchΓ©). πΈ Montreux held a special place in Freddie’s heart β Queen recorded several albums here β and the statue, arms raised mid-performance, captures his energy perfectly against the lakeside backdrop. It’s become such an iconic photo spot, and standing there, camera in hand, it was easy to see why fans from all over the world make the pilgrimage to this exact spot. πΈπΆ
Montreux Riviera Market β Festival Vibes by Chance πͺποΈ
We got lucky β there was a market festival happening right along the Montreux Riviera Market area when we arrived, and it added such a lively, spontaneous energy to the day. π Stalls, local goods, music in the air, and crowds strolling along the lakefront β it felt like the whole town had come out to enjoy the sunshine together. We wandered through, browsing what was on offer, soaking in the festive atmosphere we hadn’t even planned for. ποΈπ
Shopping, Food & a Lazy Lakeside Afternoon π½οΈπ
After the market, we ducked into a nearby shopping mall for a bit, grabbed some food, and just took things slow for a while β a welcome pause after a fairly packed few days of sightseeing. π We spent the rest of the afternoon doing exactly what a lakeside town like this calls for β a few gentle walks, a couple of little rides, and more wandering through the markets, all with the lake as our constant backdrop. No rigid plan, just letting the day unfold. π€οΈπΆββοΈ
By evening, we made our way back to Geneva, tired in the best possible way, already replaying the day in our heads. πβ€οΈ

Final Thoughts π
Montreux wasn’t the plan β but it turned into one of those unexpected, quietly magical days that you end up cherishing the most. A palm-lined promenade, a rockstar’s statue, an impromptu festival, and a whole lot of lakeside calm β sometimes the best travel memories come from the detours, not the itinerary. π»πβ¨
Travel Tips βοΈπ
Getting There π§³
We travelled from Geneva and returned the same evening β Montreux makes for a very manageable day trip if a GoldenPass or Interlaken plan doesn’t work out. Trains run frequently along the lake, and the journey itself is scenic enough to be part of the experience.
Best For πΈ
Photo lovers, Queen fans, and anyone who just wants a slower, lakeside kind of day. The promenade and the Freddie Mercury statue are must-visits, and if you happen to catch a local market or festival like we did, even better.
Merci, Montreux β you were the surprise of the trip! π€πβ€οΈ
